Our 2020 cohort of AIRs have been faced with challenges like no other. Originally awarded with a 15-week residency in January, that has since been extended to last through December 31st, 2020, this resilient group has  persevered  through the challenges and uncertainty of studio closures, limited re-openings, and a continually changing artistic landscape.

Presented over Zoom Webinar, this event will spotlight these talented artists, their past and ongoing work, as well as how they have persevered and navigated their art-making through quarantine and the ongoing pandemic.

Please join us in supporting these artists and attending this virtual discussion panel on Tuesday, December 22nd!
Registrants will receive an emailed Zoom link prior to the event.

2020 Artists-In-Residence:

Rourou Ye

Rourou Ye is a dancer, choreographer and educator. Her early training was in Chinese dance, followed by studies in American and European dance and theater practices. Five years ago she left her position as an instructor and choreographer in the Musical Theater department at one of China’s top conservatories and came to the US to make work. Choosing to live as a freelance dance artist is completely against her Chinese values and her family’s expectations, and she’s struggling as an outsider in both countries.

Rourou holds a BFA in Choreography from Shanghai Theater Academy and MFA in Dance from Sarah Lawrence College. Her work has been presented by GIBNEY, Danspace Project, Movement Research, CPR, The Field, Dixon Place, Bronx Academy of Art and Dance, LMCC, Austin Dance Festival, and in China by Shanghai International Dance Festival, Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Beijing Dance Festival, and China Dance Forward (Hong Kong).

Hans

Artist Statement: I am a dancer and graphic/tattoo artist originally from Miami, FL, who has developed an artistic practice that creates a circular dialogue between my creative modalities. Necessity, survival, and rage are what dictates my practice and is reflected in my approach to making: “anything you want to do, you gotta do it yourself.” I’ve shared work with audiences during Art Basel in Miami, Dixon Place, and performed in works by Katy Pyle's Ballez, the Bill T.Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company, Pavel Zustiak’s Palissimo Company, and with Luciana Achugar and Mariangela Lopez. I have been an AiR at Otion Front Studios, and most recently as part of the Helix Network’s “Needing It” AiR program at Brooklyn Arts Exchange (BAX). My artwork investigates Sailor Moon, femme mythology, Latiné identity, flamenco, queerness, sex, mental health, and addiction.
